The Uninvited-Michaele and Tareq Salahi Wednesday, Dec 2 2009

WASHINGTON — The attention-hungry couple that crashed the Obama administration’s first state dinner admitted to a friendly Pentagon official that they went without a confirmed invitation — just in case they got approved at the last minute.Tareq and Michaele Salahi claimed a dead cell phone battery prevented them from hearing a voicemail earlier that day advising them they did not make the guest list.

The Salahis gave that account in an e-mail sent just hours after last week’s dinner to Pentagon official Michele Jones, who had tried to get them invited. A collection of e-mails between the Salahis and Jones was obtained Tuesday night by The Associated Press from a source who got them in manner that confirmed their authenticity.

Obama Warns Karzai to Focus on Tackling Corruption Tuesday, Nov 3 2009

WASHINGTON — President Obama on Monday admonished President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan that he must take on what American officials have said he avoided during his first term: the rampant corruption and drug trade that have fueled the resurgence of the Taliban.

President Hamid Karzai in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Monday, at a greeting ceremony for the United Nations secretary general, Ban Ki-moon.

As Mr. Karzai was officially declared the winner of the much-disputed presidential election, Mr. Obama placed a congratulatory call in which he asked for a new chapter in the legitimacy of the Afghan government.

What he is seeking, Mr. Obama told reporters afterward, is a sense on the part of President Karzai that, after some difficult years in which there has been some drift, that in fact hes going to move boldly and forcefully forward and take advantage of the international community interest in his country to initiate reforms internally. That has to be one of our highest priorities.

President Obama spoke to reporters on Monday after his telephone conversation with President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan.

The corruption problem has surfaced repeatedly as Mr. Obama has been holding meetings to review his Afghanistan strategy, administration officials said.

‘She’s With Me’: Obama Writes Girl Absence Note Friday, Jun 12 2009

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Ten-year-old Kennedy Corpus has a rock-solid excuse for missing the last day of school: a personal note to her teacher from President Barack Obama. Her father, John Corpus of Green Bay, stood to ask Obama about health care during the president’s town hall-style meeting at Southwest High School on Thursday. He told Obama that his daughter was missing school to attend the event and that he hoped she didn’t get in trouble.”Do you need me to write a note?” Obama asked. The crowd laughed, but the president was serious.

On a piece of paper, he wrote: “To Kennedy’s teacher: Please excuse Kennedy’s absence. She’s with me. Barack Obama.” He stepped off the stage to hand-deliver the note — to Kennedy’s surprise. “I thought he was joking until he started walking down,” Kennedy said after the event, showing off the note in front of a bank of television cameras. “It was like the best thing ever.” The fourth-grader at Aldo Leopold elementary in Green Bay already knew what she was going to do with the note: frame it along with her ticket to the event. She said she’d make a copy for her teacher.

Kennedy said she had never seen Obama before. “He’s really nice,” she said. As part of his latest effort to push for aggressive action on health care this year, Obama said at the town hall that Americans who can’t afford health insurance need to be provided with more affordable options — provided by the government if not private insurers. The president said a public health insurance option, which Republicans strongly oppose, should be included in any plan to keep the insurance companies honest and prices down.
