Raised by pets, 5-yr-old girl barks instead of talking Saturday, May 30 2009

Chita (Russia): The Russian girl who was ‘raised’ by dogs and cats amid squalor in the east Siberian city of Chita could soon adapt to a normal life, say doctors. Five-year-old girl, nicknamed Mowgli by Russian media after the fictitious character from the Rudyard Kipling book, has not learned to speak, and makes only animal-like noises, despite sharing the three-room flat with her father and other relatives.

The child, who was found by police “unwashed, in dirty clothes, and with the obvious habits of a domestic animal”, is at the physical development stage of a two or three year old and is being treated in a rehabilitation centre. “The girl will be able to adapt and will quickly catch up with her mates in development”, says psychiatrist Mikhail Vinogradov, adding that Russia had previous experience in dealing with such children.

The psychiatrist says that the child, who has never been outside her flat, has first to go through a period of adaptation with children of the same development stage. The report said the family was living in squalor, and that “the water, heating, gas, and sanitation had long ago been switched off”.

Despite being isolated from society, the girl found no difficulty playing with other children at the centre. Specialist medical staff, who are currently studying the child, said that “she looks like she’ll be healthy”. The girl’s mother called in at a police station when she realised her daughter had been taken. The father, who was not in the flat when the police discovered the girl, was detained on Wednesday.

A criminal case has been opened against family members, but the maximum prison term is three years. Authorities are deciding whether they should lose their paternal rights. The father, however, said he considered the family’s living conditions as normal and demanded that the child be returned home. He added that the girl’s mother was an alcoholic who neglected the child.

Susan Boyle Is Your ‘Ultimate Idol’ Saturday, May 30 2009

And the “Ultimate Idol” is . . . Susan Boyle!

More than 57,000 of you voted in a FOXNews.com viewer poll, and a whopping 71 percent of you say Boyle, the “Britain’s Got Talent” sensation, has the pipes to pummel “American Idol” winner Kris Allen. And unlike “American Idol,” we’re giving you the exact tally: 40,966 votes for Boyle and 16,898 votes for Allen.

Despite Boyle’s foul-mouthed rant earlier this week and rumors of another impending meltdown, her fans remain steadfast in their support of the single Scot with the voice of an angel.  “Once in a blue moon someone comes along that takes you and knocks you for a loop,” one voter said in our FOXNews.com YouDecide poll. “Susan should win hands down, she has the once in a lifetime voice.”

And while Allen’s fans voiced their support for the new American Idol, describing his talent as “amazing” and “absolutely awesome,” it wasn’t enough to save him from the phenomenon known as SuBo. Boyle will perform in the “Britain’s Got Talent” finale Saturday despite claims that she was ready to leave the show on Wednesday. Fans feared the worst after Piers Morgan, a judge on the show, said Thursday that the singer was in tears and had packed her bags to leave. But a spokeswoman denied the rumor, saying Boyle is working hard to prepare for “the biggest night in her life.”

Scientists Find New ‘Ebola’ Like Virus in Africa Friday, May 29 2009

ATLANTA  —  Scientists have identified a lethal new virus in Africa that causes bleeding like the dreaded Ebola virus.

The so-called “Lujo” virus infected five people in Zambia and South Africa last fall. Four of them died, but a fifth survived, perhaps helped by a medicine recommended by the scientists.  It’s not clear how the first person became infected, but the bug comes from a family of viruses found in rodents, said Dr. Ian Lipkin, a Columbia University epidemiologist involved in the discovery.

“This one is really, really aggressive” he said of the virus. A paper on the virus by Lipkin and his collaborators was published online Thursday on in PLoS Pathogens. The outbreak started in September, when a female travel agent who lives on the outskirts of Lusaka, Zambia, became ill with a fever-like illness that quickly grew much worse.

She was airlifted to Johannesburg, South Africa, where she died. A paramedic in Lusaka who treated her also became sick, was transported to Johannesburg and died. The three others infected were health care workers in Johannesburg.Investigators believe the virus spread from person to person through contact with infected body fluids.

“It’s not a kind of virus like the flu that can spread widely,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which helped fund the research. The name given to the virus — “Lujo” — stems from Lusaka and Johannesburg, the cities where it was first identified. Investigators in Africa thought the illness might be Ebola, because some of the patients had bleeding in the gums and around needle injection sites, said Stuart Nichol, chief of the molecular biology lab in the CDC’s Special Pathogens Branch. Other symptoms include include fever, shock, coma and organ failure.

Genetic extracts of blood and liver from the victims were tested at Columbia University in New York, and additional testing was done at CDC in Atlanta. Tests determined it belonged to the arenavirus family, and that it is distantly related to Lassa fever, another disease found in Africa. The drug ribavirin, which is given to Lassa victims, was given to the fifth Lujo virus patient — a Johannesburg nurse. It’s not clear if the medicine made a difference or if she just had a milder case of the disease, but she fully recovered, Nichol said.

The research is a startling example of how quickly scientists can now identify new viruses, Fauci said. Using genetic sequencing techniques, the virus was identified in a matter of a few days — a process that used to take weeks or longer.Along with Fauci’s institute, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and Google also helped fund the research.

Sania Mirza Breaks A Million Heart Friday, May 29 2009

Sania Mirza

New Delhi: Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza has got engaged to a Hyderabad-based businessman but her family has ruled out an immediate wedding or early retirement for the star. Sania gets engaged to Hyderabad-based businessman
The 22-year-old, who is the most successful woman tennis player of the country, will continue playing the game and her father Imran Mirza said it will take a while before the two families decide on when the wedding would take place.

“This is to confirm that Sania Mirza is engaged to Mr. Muhammad Sohrab Mirza, whose family hails from the city of Hyderabad. Although not related, the two families have had friendly ties for several decades. However, the wedding is not expected to take place for a while,” Imran Mirza said. “I would like to state that the news appearing in certain sections of the media about the two maternal grandmothers having fixed the liaison is baseless. It has also been wrongly projected that Sania is contemplating early retirement from tennis. These reports are absolutely untrue,” he said.

Sania’s career has been marred by injuries and countless controversies but despite the off-court woes, she has been the lone flagbearer of Indian women’s tennis internationally. Sania was the first Indian to win a WTA singles title and earlier this year added an elusive Grand Slam title to her kitty when she combined with Mahesh Bhupathi to win the mixed doubles event at the Australian Open. Sania is currently in Paris playing the French Open.

Kansas Girl Spells ‘Laodicean’ to Win National Spelling Bee Friday, May 29 2009

WASHINGTON — Cool and collected, Kavya Shivashankar wrote out every word on her palm and always ended with a smile. The 13-year-old Kansas girl saved the biggest smile for last, when she rattled off the letters to “Laodicean” to become the nation’s spelling champion. The budding neurosurgeon from Olathe, Kan., outlasted 11 finalists Thursday night to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, taking home more than $40,000 in cash and prizes and, of course, the huge champion’s trophy.

After spelling the winning word, which means lukewarm or indifferent in religion or politics, Kavya got huge hugs from her father, mother and little sister. Kavya was making her fourth appearance at the bee, having finishing 10th, eighth and fourth over the last three years. She enjoys playing the violin, bicycling, swimming and learning Indian classical dance, and her role model is Nupur Lala, the 1999 champion featured in the documentary “Spellbound.”

Iran: Many die in Zahedan mosque bombing Friday, May 29 2009

The bomb detonated during evening prayers in the mosque

A bomb in a mosque in south-east Iran has killed at least 19 people and injured 60, the governor of Sistan-Baluchestan province said.

The explosion happened in Zahedan, the provincial capital, at the time of evening prayer, Ali Mohammad Azad told Iranian state TV. He said “terrorists”, who had planned to detonate more bombs, were arrested. The province is often the scene of lawlessness, including clashes between police and drug dealers or militants.
Zahedan is a mainly Sunni Muslim city in a mostly Shia country.

‘Suicide attack’

Part of the Amir al-Mohini mosque was destroyed, the official news agency Irna reported. Rescue teams were taking out the bodies of the dead and injured. “It was a terrorist attack and the bomb was exploded by a terrorist,” Mr Azad said, according to Irna, adding that members of a terrorist group had been arrested. Mr Azad said “bandits and terrorists intended to disturb the order in the province before the election considering the insecurity in the eastern neighbouring countries”.

Although it occurred in a remote region, the explosion comes at a time of heightened political sensitivity nationally, with just over two weeks before the first round of the presidential election . Fars news agency quoted witnesses saying the incident had been a suicide attack, and that a second bomb had been defused near the mosque. The reports could not be verified. Thursday was a public holiday marking the death of the Prophet Muhammad’s daughter, Fatima.

Drugs trade

Sistan-Baluchestan is one of the most deprived regions in Iran. Its location on the borders of both Afghanistan and Pakistan make it a key route in the drugs trade. Despite Iran’s best efforts, a huge proportion of the world’s opiates, such as heroin and morphine, are smuggled by heavily armed drugs gangs, often in large convoys. There are also a number of militants in the area, many of them with links to the drugs gangs, and clashes with the security forces are common.

Two years ago at least 11 people, including members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, were killed by a bomb in Zahedan. Foreigners are strongly advised to avoid the area, and a recent visit by a number of diplomats was accompanied by extremely heavy security, says the BBC’s John Leyne in Tehran. The insurgency is linked with the area’s large Sunni population – at odds with Iran’s Shia-led government. But the Iranian government also accuses the US and Britain of supporting the militants.

Clooney, Beckham and Craig join ‘Free Suu Kyi’ chant Thursday, May 28 2009

London: Hollywood actors George Clooney, Daniel Craig and soccer star David Beckham have joined forces with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in lending support to Myanmar’s pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi. The A-listers were approached by campaign group ‘Not on Our Watch’ to pen messages of support for Suu Kyi, who has been fighting for democracy in the Asian country.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner has spent the past decade under house arrest and the celebrities have been asked to write 64-word messages of support which will be delivered to Suu Kyi on her upcoming 64th birthday on June 19, British newspaper the Mirror reported online.

Stephen Fry, Kevin Spacey and Sarah Brown have also been asked to write messages for 63-year-old Suu Kyi. The message written by Bond star Daniel Craig says, “Nineteen years ago, the Burmese people chose Aung San Suu Kyi as their next leader. For most of those 19 years she has been kept under house arrest by the military junta that runs the country. We must not stand by as she is silenced again. Now is the time for the international community to speak with one voice: Free Aung San Suu Kyi.”

The leader has been held under house arrest for 13 of the past 19 years, and currently stands accused of breaking the terms of her confinement. The launch of the website 64forSuu.org is timed to coincide with the date her imprisonment should have stopped.

Kris Allen vs. Susan Boyle: Who Is the Ultimate Amateur ‘Idol’? Wednesday, May 27 2009

Susan Boyle krisallen

With “American Idol” as popular as it is, one might assume that last week’s winner Kris Allen would be the biggest amateur singer in the world right now.

But British singing sensation Susan Boyle of “Britain’s Got Talent” fame is giving him a run for his money.

A Google search for “Kris Allen” yields almost 9 million results, but a search for “Susan Boyle” yields more than double Allen’s numbers, with about 24 million results.

That means the race is on as fans of the two unofficial reality show rivals battle it out to make their favorite amateur the Web’s top searched star. But we want to know what you think: who is your ultimate Idol – Susan Boyle or Kris Allen?

On the surface, the two couldn’t be more different – Boyle is a single Scottish woman who lives alone with her cat Pebbles, and Allen is a 23-year-old handsome Arkansas man married to a beautiful young wife. But the two actually have more in common than one might think. Both reality show singers – Allen the winner on “Idol” and Boyle a finalist on “Talent” – boast several fan sites. And both are classic underdogs: Boyle a 47-year-old who made her debut with an unkempt appearance, and Allen going into the finale as the projected runner up to judge-favorite Adam Lambert.

More than half of U.K. television watchers on Sunday night tuned in to watch Boyle sing “Memory” from the hit Broadway show “Cats” for her second performance on “Britain’s Got Talent.” One of the show’s judges, Piers Morgan, called Boyle the most downloaded woman in the history of the internet.”

Similarly, Allen also broke a few records with his win – with more than 100 million viewers casting votes to send him to the top.
